Spankys
Spanky's, is an American Bar and Grill located on the busiest corner of downtown Chapel Hill, NC. A Chapel Hill institution since 1977, Spanky's is famous for great hamburgers, brown sugar baby back ribs, garden fresh salads and North Carolina BBQ cooked on premise. One of Franklin Street's most famous landmarks, Spanky's is a stone's throw from the campus of the University of North Carolina and a short drive from the Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) and the Research Triangle Park (RTP). The bar is a late night destination for local citizens and students of UNC.
Our Mission
As with the entire Chapel Hill Restaurant Group, Spanky's strives to provide the value of quality service and outstanding food at an affordable price. We are committed to creating the best possible dining experience from our first contact with the guest through the end of the meal. We have also chosen to accomplish our goals sustainably, and we are proud of our efforts to become a leader in our industry. The Chapel Hill Restaurant Group was named "Sustainable Business of the Year" in 2007. All our restaurants use compostable to go containers, bags, bar stirrers etc in an effort to protect the environment. Spanky's, 411 West and Squid's Restaurant participate in a food recycling program. Mez Contemporary Mexican, our newest restaurant was the first Green Plus certified business in the United States, and was the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-designed restaurant in North Carolina.
Biographies
Jennifer Anderson, General Manager
Jennifer began her career with the Chapel Hill Restaurant Group in 1998 as a bartender and server at Squid's Restaurant after graduating from the University of North Carolina. In 1999, she assumed a part-time Assistant Floor Manager position at 411 West in Chapel Hill, which she fulfilled while continuing to work at Squid's. She was offered a full time position as Floor Manager at Spanky's Restaurant in 2000, which involved reopening the restaurant with new staff and a new menu after the restaurant was remodeled in 1999. Jennifer has trained her staff to reflect her personality, which delivers friendly and efficient customer service in a fun-loving and caring atmosphere. She assumed the role of General Manager in 2008 and has continued to welcome regular customers and new faces to visit Spanky's and Franklin Street.
Gavin Toth, Floor Manager
Gavin began working at Spanky's in 2005 as a server and bartender while he was a student at the University of North Carolina. He worked diligently to learn the various aspects of service to Spanky's customers and once he graduated, he was trained to be a Floor Manager by Tom Herzog and Jennifer Anderson and assumed this full-time responsibility in 2008. Gavin also acts as Bar Manager and strives to provide a dynamic variety of popular and local beer, wine, and cocktails for Spanky's customers.
Miles Duggan, Executive Chef
Miles provides expertise in the kitchen of Spanky's that comes from many years of development in the Chapel Hill Restaurant Group. Starting at 411 West in 1996, he began as a Garde (Pantry) Manager and then worked through all stations in the kitchen to accumulate the full range of culinary skills. In 2000, Miles transitioned to the position of Sous Chef at 411 West. He accepted the new position of Executive Chef at Spanky's in 2002 and has since led the culinary team in providing high quality, all-American favorites to Spanky's restaurant, bar, and banquet customers. Miles also has contributed his skill in menu development to new menus at Spanky's and at Mez.
Michael Barnes, Sous Chef
Michael was born in Chapel Hill and attended culinary school at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte where he received a degree in both Culinary Arts and Business Management. Michael has been on the kitchen staff at Mez for 3 years, the past 2 as Sous Chef. Michael possesses a great deal of creative talent and is a valued member of the management staff.
